Here the english text to the Video of Federico Caloi:
„The journey is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness” so wrote Mark Twain
From the image of nature, with her painting clearly inspired by abstract expressionism, a movement which was a very important school in Germany until several years ago, Gisela Hammer, in the same style, goes to very bold themes, through the faces of people, speaks to us of diversity, of inclusion, of love for our neighbors. And what are these portraits of her if not the mirror of ourselves, another person from another part of the world is nothing more than a us born and living in another place. Yes, of course, with different customs and traditions than ours, but only because it should be that I was born here and she was born there. From here Gisela Hammer, who works in series, comes to works painted on African fabrics, to root her painting even more in the sense of inclusion with portraits of African women she has met in her travels, to a series of works of refugees. This is a subject that European countries do not have the courage to address.
The artist herself says:
“No one without necessity leaves his home, family, friends and country. Wars, terror and economic distress are the triggers for big refugee movements. All this moved me deeply when I met these people during my travels.”
A strong work, portraits that are a mirror of our soul, a great empathy for a message that wants to leave its mark.
This will, this desire to represent humanity through the faces of the people met, makes the art of Gisela Hammer a rare example of sensitivity through paintings which are expressive, penetrating, intense in brushstroke and heart.
